The Dissident: A Glimpse of Jamal Khashoggi's Life and Death

The documentary movie that I believe will create a fuss in Saudi Arabia and become a controversial issue amongst the elite politics who have financial ties with it is portraying the life of Jamal Khashoggi, a Saudi exile, who was assassinated in the Embassy of Saudi Arabia, in Turkey.

In October 2018, Jamal entered his country's embassy in Turkey to pick up some paper works for his wedding with Hatice Cengiz, but never came out. He was killed and his body was dismembered, never been found.

Jamal was a Saudi Arabian journalist working as a correspondent for the Washington Post. He critiqued the way the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, knows as MBS, ran the country. Jamal was once an insider of the regime that made him witness how the Crown Prince began to consolidate his power. Jamal began to be so critical to the government, especially to its dealing with the US President Donald Trump.

This documentary movie consists of some interviews with the people who have made investigation to what happen to Jamal. One of them is Omar Abdulaziz, a dissident who worked with Jamal and ran away from Saudi because of his provocative tweets against the government. Omar ran to Canada and lived there.

After almost two weeks, the Embassy of Saudi allowed the Turkey Police Dept. to enter the building and started to make investigation. There were some places on the wall and floor with bloods and also they found a well inside that they suspected to be the place where they dumped the pieces of Jamal's body. One of the technician worked in the building said that the day Jamal entered the building, he was ordered to prepare the barbecue grill and also order meats. Police suspected that they made barbecue to cover the smell of the blood when they dismembered Jamal's body.

The people who have been flown in a private jet from Saudi and Egypt were caught in the surveillance camera. Also, when one of them came out from the building wearing Jamal's clothes to decoy the camera. But, one thing they did not know was that, the Turkish had put hidden recorder inside the building far before the incident, because actually they have suspected something fishy was going on inside the building. From the transcript then the police found out the horror thing happened to Jamal. From the way he begged for his life til the joke the 'butcher' said and laugh about that he, as a doctor, never cut people on the floor before.

The case went to CIA's. 20 people were investigated and after all the story, the police decided that they need to investigate the Crown Prince. MBS denied all the suspicion, he said it was done by the Elite Politics and that it's not his order to kill Jamal. Those people then were flown back to Saudi and the government said that there were some people who were sentenced death because of Jamal's murder. But, the Saudi government never mentioned their names.

If you like politics and spy movie, this documentary movie will be really worth to watch. There was a part when Omar explained about the Flies and the Bees (a term for the Saudi Cyber army and the revolutionist who fight in twitter), how the technology may control the world easily, how the social media may be a very strong weapon to influence people. There was a program called Pegasus that was ran by the Saudi Government and look how it worked (sorry for the bad pic, I just recorded using my phone):

This movie by filmmaker, Bryan Fogel, portrayed the life of Jamal Khashoggi and what he stood for, how he struggled for it but then finally died in the struggle. In my opinion, for whatever reason, this movie is a depiction on how politics can be so inhuman and also depicts how powerful Saudi is. If they can kill someone who has a high rank in society like Jamal that way, whom else they can not kill! We all know that MBS will not and never stand for trial of this murder.

I don't think this movie will be on Netfix, remembering how controversial it is and also I have searched in the internet and no offering for any streaming movie.

Cheers
